Evelyn Loehrlein, Flute
Evelyn Loehrlein, principal flutist of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra since 1988, has performed with the HSO for 24 seasons. She also serves as the HSO's Director of Marketing and Public Relations, and is the "voice of the HSO" in radio spots heard throughout the Tennessee Valley.
A versatile musician, Evelyn is also a regular performer with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. In June of 2004, she appeared with the NCO at Bonnaroo with Trey Anastasio of Phish, and in November and December of 2003, she toured with Amy Grant and Vince Gill. She was a featured soloist with NCO in a performance of Bach's Brandenberg Concerto No. 3 in October, 2000.
Evelyn has made numerous solo appearances with HSO, including performances of Ellen Taafe Zwilich's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Howard Hanson's Serenade, J. S. Bach's B minor Suite, and Poem by Charles Griffes. She performed as piccolo soloist with the HSO under the direction of Keith Brian, in one of his popular John Phillip Sousa concerts, and in November, 2000, she performed Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp with her colleague Katherine Newman.
A passionate advocate of music education, Evelyn was the founding director of the Symphony School of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. She initiated partnerships with community organizations and five public school systems to provide innovative music education programs in the elementary schools.
Evelyn grew up in Huntsville, and her first flute teacher was Mary Lou McNabb, then principal flutist of HSO.
She attended HSO concerts as a child, performed with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra as a teenager, and won the position of second flute with the HSO at the age of nineteen while a music major at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In elementary school, HSO's Young People's Concerts were an early inspiration for her, and she credits the efforts of the Huntsville Symphony Guild for continuing its tradition of bringing music and children together.
Evelyn plays on a wooden Powell flute, crafted in 1999. She also owns a Brannen Brothers platinum flute and a Powell solid 14 karat gold flute, among others. And YES — she loves her wooden flute the most! She generously loans her flutes to colleagues and students. Her interesting collection of folk flutes comes in handy during her many demonstrations to school children.
In her spare time, she likes to hang out with her above-average sons John, Mike and Jerry, and her exceptional dogs, Lucy the standard poodle, and Alvis, the boxer.
